Play your part in Bridgend’s public art

As part of the planned improvements due to start at Cheapside in February, Bridgend County Borough Council is asking for residents’ views on proposed public art for the area.

Following a call out for artists, a shortlist was selected and tasked to submit designs. These public art proposals are displayed at the Customer Service Centre in Civic Offices this week, until Friday 3 February.

Funded by a grant under the European Convergence Programme, the Cheapside public art proposals aim to create a more attractive environment and encourage people to visit the town centre along this improved route. This is an integral part of the planned environmental improvements, which will include new paving, street lighting, road resurfacing and landscaping. Work is due to start on site in February, at the same time as improvements being carried out along Merthyr Mawr Road North. The two schemes combine to form the first phase of the Bridgend Town Centre Regeneration Programme which is being funded by the Welsh Government, the European Regional Development Fund and Bridgend County Borough Council.

Following the exhibition, an artist will be appointed early February and the public art work is expected to be finished and installed by October 2012, when the Cheapside upgrading work will also be completed.
